Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s 2016 Rio Olympics mixed doubles silver medalist – Goh Liu Ying, yesterday announced her retirement from top-level badminton, saying that next year’s Malaysia Open will be her final international tournament.

The badminton queen from Malaysia told the media on Wednesday that if she could qualify for next year’s Malaysia Open, that would be her last professional tournament.

“Next year’s Malaysia Open will be my last tournament. As for who I will be partnering with at that tournament? Let’s wait and see, but this will definitely be my last competition,” said Goh.

“If you want to ask me whether I’ll become a coach or not (after retirement), it really depends on the situation and opportunities, but for sure I’ll still involve in the sport of badminton,” added Goh.

In addition to the Rio Olympics silver medal, the 33-year-old Goh also won several other tournaments including the 2010 Asian championship and the New Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Goh and Chan Peng Soon created a sensation in 2016 when they upset several higher-ranked pairs to advance to the final of the Rio Olympics

Co-incidentally, Chan Peng Soon who suffered a French Open first-round exit last Tuesday, posted the message below on his Facebook page three days ago prompted speculation that he could be retiring from the sport as well:
