Malang: Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia squandered 7 straight points in the first game of the 2022 Indonesia Masters second-round match against former world junior champion – Sun Fei Xiang of China, losing the game 15-21.
The World No. 32 Malaysian however managed to level the match to 1-1 by winning the second game 21-14.
Although Sun once narrowed the gap to 16-17 in the decider, Ng held his nerve, reeling off 4 consecutive points to complete the match with a 21-16 win in the third set.
The No. 1 seed will play compatriot Shahyar Shaqeem on Thursday.
Another Malaysian men’s singles player – Cheam June Wei also made the third round by beating Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay of Indonesia 22-20, 21-19. Cheam will battle Jung Min Seon of Korea for a spot in the quarter-finals.
At the bottom half of the men’s singles draw – World No. 101 Leong Jun Hao also advanced, however, he got tough task in the third round as he is scheduled to play World No. 49, Koki Watanabe, next.
The women’s singles event saw Malaysia’s 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) women’s singles gold medalist Kisona Selvaduray eased past Rachel Chan of Canada 21-3, 21-15 to meet up with Imad Farooqui Samiya of India in the second round.
