Hochiminh City: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair – Goh Liu Ying/Low Juan Shen successfully defeated Anh Gia Huy Nguyen/My Tien Lam of Vietnam 21-16, 21-17 on Thursday to cruise into the Vietnam Open quarter-finals.
The unseeded Goh/Low will meet No. 2 seeds Zachariah Josiahno Sumanti/Hediana Julimarbela of Indonesia on Friday.
Goh Liu Ying’s former mixed doubles partner, Chan Peng Soon who currently playing with Cheah Yee See, also made the quarter-finals. Chan/Cheah outlasted the Malaysia and Indonesia combination of Tan Ming Kang/Serena Kani 21-17, 21-17 in the second round and will next meet Rohan Kapoor/Reddy N. Sikki of India.
Three Malaysian men’s singles players were untroubled by their respective opponents on Thursday. World No. 67 Cheam June Wei will play World No. 89 Lee Chia Hao of Taiwan; World No. 221 Ong Ken Yon will meet World No. 64 Weng Hong Yang of China, while World No. 210 Lee Shun Yang will take on World No. 140 Sun Fei Xiang of China in the final 8.
In men’s doubles, the 2014 Malaysia Open champions – Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah will set up an all-Malaysian quarter-final battle with Junaidi Arif/Muhammad Haikal while Low Juan Shen/Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub Azriyn have a tough task ahead as they will meet No. 2 seeds He Ji Ting/Zhou Hao Dong of China on Friday.
Meanwhile, women’s singles No. 7 seed Goh Jin Wei managed to roar past Ira Sharma of India 21-18, 21-10 and will play Thi Anh Thu Vu of Vietnam next while Kisona Selvaduray faced a tougher than expected challenge when she was pushed to the distance by Thet Htar Thuzar of Myanmar before winning her second round match 16-21, 21-18, 21-18. Kisona is scheduled to clash with Thi Phuong Thuy Tran of Vietnam in the quarter-finals.
