Tokyo: Malaysia’s World No. 11 mixed doubles pair, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing, produced a brilliant performance at the 2022 World Championships on Tuesday.
Tan/Lai needed only 22 minutes to defeat the mother and son pair – Misha Zilberman (33 years old)/Svetlana Zilberman (64 years old) 21-6, 21-5 in their second-round match in Tokyo.
The Malaysian duo will take on World No. 29 Kyohei Yamashita/Naru Shinoya of Japan in the next round. Yamashita/Shinoya on the other hand, pulled off an upset to beat No. 10 seeds Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje of Denmark 21-13, 21-18.
In another mixed doubles action, Cheng Tang Jie/Peck Yen Wei put up a strong fight before going down to the Tokyo Olympics champions – Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping from China 14-21, 21-12, 11-21.
In women’s singles, World No. 40 Soniia Cheah of Malaysia got off to a strong start by beating World No. 43 Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-19, 21-18 to set up a second-round meeting with the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Chen Yu Fei of China in the second round.
Meanwhile, the World No. 32 women’s pair – Anna Cheong Ching Yik/Teoh Mei Xing registered a first-round victory over Stine Kuespert/Emma Moszczynski 21-13, 21-15 and will take on No. 9 seeds Jeong Na Eun/Kim Hye Jeong of Korea in the second round.
