Singapore: Indonesia’s World No. 6 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting has advanced to the 2022 Singapore Open final after defeating home favorite and reigning World Champion – Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-17, 21-14 in 37 minutes in the semi-finals.
This will be Ginting’s first final of 2022 and he will battle Japan’s World 43 Kodai Naraoka for the men’s singles title.
On the other hand, after winning the first game against World No. 26 Zhao Jun Peng of China 21-18, the 21-year-old Naraoka avoided the third game when he successfully took the second game 25-23.
As Japan’s World No. 2 Kento Momota seemed to have entered the twilight of his career, while World No. 14 Kanta Tsuneyama and World No. 21 Kenta Nishimoto have both struggling to make an impact at BWF tournaments, the sudden rise of Naraoka could be a timely boost for the Japanese men’s singles department.
In men’s doubles, Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin have qualified for the final after beating Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan 9-21, 21-18, 22-20.
The other men’s doubles semi-final saw World No. 5 Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto make their 7th final in 2022 when they outlasted compatriots Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani 21-11, 21-7.
In a pulsating mixed doubles semi-final match that went down to the wire, the 2018 Singapore Open champions Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai were leading 17-13 in the decider against World No. 2 Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand, but couldn’t finish the job to eventually lose the very close match 21-17, 16-21, 22-20. Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai will take on World No. 4 and the Tokyo Olympics champions – Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping of China in the final.
Meanwhile, PV Sindhu of India will play Wang Zhi Yi of China in the women’s singles final and Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia will clash with Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu of China for the women’s doubles crown.
