Singapore: Malaysia’s World No. 47 men’s singles player, Ng Tze Yong has confirmed his place in the Singapore Open second round after beating World No. 12 Angus Ng Ka Long who finished runner-up at last week’s Malaysia Masters.
Ng Tze Yong needed 44 minutes to beat Angus Ng Ka Long 21-16, 21-17 in the first-round action which took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The victory will likely serve as a confidence booster for the 22-year-old Ng when competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games which will take place in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8.
Ng will set to meet another player from Hong Kong, World No. 15 Lee Cheuk Yew in the second round.
In addition to Angus Ng Ka Long, last week’s Malaysia Masters champion Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia also faltered in the Singapore Open first round when Wardoyo lost to Brian Yang of Canada 12-21, 17-21 on Wednesday.
Yang is set to meet Zhao Jun Peng of China on Thursday.
Meanwhile, four Malaysian mixed doubles pairs, Chan Peng Soon/Cheah Yee See, Chen Tang Jie/Valeree Siow, Hoo Pang Ron/Toh Ee Wei, and Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai Jemie also advanced to the second round of the Singapore Open.
Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See were facing Chan’s former mixed doubles partner, Goh Liu Ying, and her new mixed doubles partner, Soong Joo Ven on Wednesday, and Chan/Cheah successfully overcame Goh/Soong for the second time in their career head-to-head meeting 21-14, 21-18. Chan/Cheah are going to face a tough test they will take on the Tokyo Olympic champions Wang Yi Lyu/Huang Dong Ping of China next.
In another mixed doubles action, Chen Tang Jie/Valeree Siow defeated New Zealand pair, Oliver Leydon Davis/Anona Pak 21-14, 21-14, and will meet qualifiers Reginald Lee Chun Hei/Ng Tsz You for a place in the quarter-finals.
The World No. 24 Hoo Pang Ron/Toh Ee Wei came from 19-20 down in the first set to ultimately beat Jones Ralfy Jansen/Linda Efler of Germany 23-21, 21-16. Hoo/Toh will be clashing No. 8 seeds from Denmark, Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Boje on Thursday.
Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai who won the Singapore Open in 2018, didn’t break a sweat on Wednesday when they were handed a walkover by their first-round opponents Yang Po Hsuan/Hu Ling Fang of Taiwan. Goh/Lai will play Indonesian pair, Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari for a ticket to the quarter-finals.
