Jakarta: The Rio Olympics mixed doubles silver medalist – Chan Peng Soon, and his new mixed doubles partner, Cheah Yee See, scored the biggest victory of their partnership thus far on Wednesday by producing a hugely-impressive performance to beat World No. 11 Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith of England 21-15, 21-16 to enter the Indonesia Open second round.
The unseeded Chan/Cheah will face No. 3 seeds Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino of Japan in the next round.
Malaysia also has another mixed pair entering the second round. Chen Tang Jie/Valeree Siow overcame compatriots Choong Hon Jian/Peck Yen Wei 21-17, 21-14 to meet No. 5 seeds Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia on Thursday.
In women’s singles, World No. 2 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei outlasted Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 21-14, 21-14 to next take on Iris Wang.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s World No. 10 women’s doubles pair – Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan didn’t face any trouble in the first round, easing past compatriots Anna Ching Yik Cheong/Teoh Mei Xing 21-12, 21-16 to battle World No. 4 Yuki Fukushima/Sayaka Hirota for a spot in the quarter-finals.
