Jakarta: Malaysia’s World No. 6 men’s doubles pair – Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and World No. 12 Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin each eliminated their respective Indonesian opponents to advance to the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Masters on Thursday.
Playing in front of the loud Indonesian fans who were cheering for Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik remained calm, saving 3 game-point and coming from behind to win the first game 27-25. Chia/Soh pretty much dominated the whole second game by beating Carnando/Marthin 21-14 to move into the quarter-finals.
Chia/Soh will take on Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang of China for a place in the semi-finals on Friday.
Meanwhile, Goh/Izzuddin also performed brilliantly to beat another Indonesian pair, Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani 23-21, 17-21, 21-9 to book the ticket to the last eight.
Nevertheless, Goh/Izzuddin have a tough task ahead of them as they will play No. 1 seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia next.
In the women’s doubles competition, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan bounced back from a first set defeat to cruise into the quarter-finals.
The 2021 Swiss Open champion eliminated South Korean pair Baek Ha Na/Lee Yu Lim 21-23, 21-17, 21-15 in the second round action that lasted for 1 hour 30 minutes.
“We are very happy with this win but we have to stay focused to face the quarter-final match which will definitely be more challenging,” said Thinaah.
Pearly-Thinaah will face the fourth seed of the tournament from Thailand, Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai for a place in the semi-finals.
