Graz: Malaysia’s World No. 133 men’s singles player Yeoh Seng Zoe became the 2022 Austrian Open champion after a 21-14, 21-15 victory over World No. 137 Magnus Johannesen of Denmark on Sunday.

In the semi-finals which took place Sunday morning, Yeoh defeated No. 3 seed Lee Chia Hao 24-22, 19-21, 21-17 from Chinese Taipei in one hour and 11 minutes to advance to the final. Yeoh’s victory also spoiled Chinese Taipei’s hope of sweeping all five titles at the Austrian Open.

Yeoh posted the following message on his Facebook account after the triumph.

In the men’s doubles final, Lin Yu Chieh/Su Li Wei of Chinese Taipei eliminated William Kryger Boe/Christian Faust Kjær 21-18, 21-17 for the Austrian Open title.

The all-Taiwanese women’s singles final saw No. 1 seed Hsu Wen Chi recover from losing the first set to beat No. 2 seed Sung Shuo Yun 16-21, 21-19, 21-16.

In the women’s doubles final, unseeded Lee Chia Hsin/Teng Chun Hsun pulled off an upset to stun No. 1 seeds Julie Finne-Ipsen/Mai Surrow of Denmark 21-19, 15-21, 21-10. Lee Chia Hsin also won her second title of the day when she and Ye Hong Wei outlasted compatriots Su Li Wei/Chang Ching Hui 21-16, 23-21 in the mixed doubles final.

The 2022 Austrian Open was an International Series tournament, which offered total prize money of USD $5000. Come on Badminton World Federation (BWF), $5000 USD? You can do better than that!
