Bangkok: The Malaysian women’s badminton team suffered a defeat at the hands of Denmark in their first Group C match of the Uber Cup in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday.
Malaysia’s World No. 51 Kisona Selvaduray went down to Denmark’s World No. 14 Mia Blichfeldt 14-21, 15-21 in the first women’s singles match before World No. 11 women’s pair – Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan leveled the score for Malaysia at 1-1 by beating World No. 16 Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen of Denmark 21-19, 21-19.
The two-time former World junior champion and current World No. 80 Goh Jin Wei gave Malaysia a 2-1 lead as the Malaysian outplayed the World No. 22 Line Christophersen 21-12, 11-21, 21-5.
Nevertheless, Malaysia lost the second women’s doubles match and the third women’s singles match as Anna Cheong Ching Yik/Teoh Mei Xing went down to Alexandra Bøje/Amalie Magelund 14-21, 10-21 while Myisha Mohd Khairul was beaten by Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt 12-21, 9-21.
The Malaysian Uber Cup team made a head-scratching decision in the third women’s singles where instead of fielding World No. 136 Eoon Qi Xuan who scored the only point for Malaysia when both teams met at the 2020 Uber Cup – Group D tie on October 9, 2021, Malaysia played World No. 235 Myisha Mohd Khairul in the third women’s singles and the decision could cost the Malaysian team an opportunity to advance to the knockout stage.
In other Uber Cup actions, Chinese Taipei defeated Spain 4-1, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, and China all recorded their respective victories in the group stage on Sunday.
