Basel: Indonesia’s World No. 8 Jonatan Christie ended his two-year drought at the international tournament by beating India’s HS Prannoy in straight games 21-12, 21-18 to win the Swiss Open title on Sunday. The last time Christie won a BWF World Tour tournament was at the 2019 Australian Open, where he beat Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-17, 13-21, 21-14 in the final.

Christie also became the first Indonesian player to win the Swiss Open since Marleve Mainaky won it in 2002.
After leading by 4-1 in the first game, it didn’t take long for Prannoy to overtake Christie at 7-5. However, the 24-year-old Indonesian stayed composed with his speedy attacks to surge to a 20-10 lead before winning the first game in 19 minutes.
The second game presented a different challenge for Christie because the World No. 28 Prannoy played more aggressively and the score was very close.
Prannoy managed to tie the score at 7-7 and 13-13 before the Christie started moving and attacking Prannoy’s backcourt. At 20-18, Christie won the match-point when Prannoy failed to return a push to the backcourt by Christie.
In the men’s doubles final, Indonesia’s World No. 9 Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto contributed to Indonesia’s second title at 2022 Swiss Open after defeating Malaysia’s World No. 18 Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin 21-18, 21-19.
“We are grateful and proud that we can finally win again. We learned from the last match against them, and the coach also guided us because they had previously beaten two pairs from Indonesia,” said Ardianto.
Goh/Izzuddin beat Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin in the Swiss Open quarter-finals, and then Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan in the semi-finals.
Alfian/Ardianto seemed to start to pick themselves up after performing poorly in the previous two tournaments, namely the German Open and the All England.
“The point is that we are always grateful whatever the circumstances are. If we are at the bottom, we must know how to get up. Hopefully, we can do better in the next tournament,” said Alfian.
