Birmingham: Malaysia’s World No. 10 mixed doubles pair – Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing overcame World No. 26 Supak Jomkoh/Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand in the second round of All England, beating the Thai pair 21-19, 21-17 to advance to the 2022 All England quarter-finals.
Tan/Lai have a tall task ahead of them on Friday with a matchup against former World No. 1 Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong of China. Zheng/Huang earned a 5-0 career meeting advantage against the Malaysia pair. Their last encounter was at the 2020 Indonesia Masters where Zheng/Huang beat Tan/Lai 21-15, 21-15.
The women’s doubles second round saw the World No. 15 Malaysian pair – Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan got the better of World No. 25 Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi from Japan, winning 18-21, 21-19, 21-16 in 74 minutes.
Tan/Muralitharan will play Korea’s World No. 64 Jeong Na Eun/Kim Hye Jeong on Thursday. Jeong/Kim who upset World No. 1 Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan in the first round, continued their momentum to defeat Supissara Paewsampran/Puttita Supajirakul of Thailand 19-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the second round.
In women’s singles competition, Japan’s World No. 13 Sayaka Takahashi shocked World No. 7 PV Sindhu of India, capturing the second round match 21-19, 16-21, 21-17. She will face compatriots and reigning World Champion – Akane Yamaguchi next.
The women’s singles No. 1 seed, Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan also advanced to the quarter-finals and will meet Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Friday.
