Lucknow: India’s World No. 7 women’s singles player – PV Sindhu claimed her second Syed Modi title on Sunday, to end a 2-year drought since winning the 2019 World Championships gold medal.
The No. 1 seed needed only 35 minutes to beat 20-year-old teammate Malvika Bansod 21-13, 21-16 to win the Super 300 title at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.
Sindhu first won the Syed Modi title in 2017. After winning the 2019 world title, she finished with silver at last year’s World Tour Finals and reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 World Championships.
“Every point matters. I stayed focused even when I was leading. I did make several unforced errors, but I made sure I bounced back from those errors,” said Sindhu.
“Overall, it’s been a good week, and I am happy to win the Syed Modi title,” added Sindhu.
India also won the mixed doubles gold and silver medals when Ishaan Bhatnagar/Tanisha Crasto set up an all-Indian final with compatriots T. Hema Nagendra Babu/Srivedya Gurazada. The No. 7 seeds Bhatnagar/Crasto defeated the unseeded Babu/Gurazada 21-16, 21-12.
Meanwhile, the men’s singles final match between two French players – Arnaud Merkle and Lucas Claerbout was declared “no match” by Badminton World Federation (BWF) after one finalist was tested positive for COVID-19 and the other finalist was deemed a close contact and has to withdraw from the tournament.
