Taipei: Despite finishing runner-up at the 2021 World Championships, Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan successfully racked up a total of 108,800 points in the latest BWF world rankings, which has her firmly cemented the World No. 1 status.
In addition, that 108,800 points was the highest women’s singles ranking points in the history of BWF rankings. Tai also extended the all-time record for most weeks as the women’s world number one, holding the top ranking for a total of 195 weeks.
After losing to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the 2021 BWF World Championships final last Sunday, Tai posted the message below on her social media pages:
“The result was not the best, but at least I succeeded in surpassing my previous results. Although I am not satisfied with my performance today, I have tried my best. I’ll accept every imperfection and will continue to compete and to push myself in the future. Thank you for your encouragement and thank you for your support. I am very happy and also very sad in 2021. I’ll keep all emotion inside my heart, and will use that to strengthen myself.”
She also posted a picture of her sitting inside an airplane cabin on Wednesday as she has left Huelva, Spain, and was on her way home.
Meanwhile, Tai’s record in 2021 was pretty impressive. She was able to win medals in all 5 international tournaments she participated in – she won the 2020 BWF World Tour Finals title, finished runner-up in the 2020 YONEX Thailand Open, 2020 TOYOTA Thailand Open, Tokyo Olympics, and the 2021 World Championships.
Thus far, she has accumulated 22 titles for “Super 500” or higher level tournaments and also has received the 2020/2021 BWF best female player of the year award.
For the reigning women’s singles world champion, Akane Yamaguchi, she moved up one spot in the latest BWF world rankings and is now ranked the No. 2 in the world rankings.
