Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s retired badminton legend and former World No. 1, Lee Chong Wei’s name has just gotten longer, going forward, we may need to call him Datuk Wira Dr. Lee Chong Wei.
Sporting a yellow-purple robe and a purple cap, the badminton legend from Malaysia, received an honorary doctorate in sports science from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on Thursday.
During the 58th Convocation at Green Room in Istana Arau, USM Chancellor Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail conferred the doctorate on Lee and said this was due to Lee’s achievement in badminton as he had made the country proud by winning three Olympic silver medals and also as a sports icon in Malaysia.
After the ceremony, Lee said the recognition has ignited his passion to work with USM in creating awareness on the importance of sports science.
“First of all, I thank USM for this recognition. This is the first time I receive an award like this. I hope after this I can share my experience as a badminton player in regards to the importance of sports science,” said Lee.
Lee then announced the good news on his social media pages after the ceremony. In the social media post, he jokingly described that his mom must be the happiest person as a naughty boy like him who didn’t like to study, has grown up to earn an honorary doctorate in sports science.
He ended the post with this sentence, “Mom, I finally made it!”
