Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s 2014 Youth Olympic Games mixed doubles gold medalist and current World No. 71 men’s singles player Cheam June Wei has decided to quit the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The coaching director of BAM – Wong Choong Hann told Malaysian media that Cheam has tendered his resignation letter to BAM on Saturday.
“I have received his resignation letter. I will send that to BAM’s management,” said Wong.
The 24-year-old was serving as the second men’s singles for the Malaysia team in the 2020 Thomas Cup Finals. He was sent back to Malaysia after failing to meet BAM’s KPI set by the coaches at the 2021 Czech Open and 2021 Belgian International in October. He lost in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Czech Open and had to retire in the first round of 2021 Belgian International due to an ankle injury.
Two weeks after returning home, he has finally decided to withdraw from the Malaysian national team.
His most memorable recent victory was when he recorded Malaysia’s only win in the final of the 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships by defeating World No. 8 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 21-16, 17-21, 24-22 before Indonesia went on to win the title by defeating Malaysia with an overall score of 3-1.
Cheam June Wei seemed to have made up his mind to quit BAM a week ago when he posted on his Instagram with this message “A new path, day ONE.”
