Saarbrucken: Malaysia’s World No 13 mixed doubles pair – Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai, has stormed into the Hylo Open second round on Tuesday. The event was also previously known as BMW Badminton Cup, BMW Open, Bitburger Masters, Bitburger Open, and SaarLorLux Open, was held in Saarbrücken, Germany, from Nov 2 to Nov 7.
Goh/Lai saw off the new pair from the Netherlands – Ruben Jille/Cheryl Seinen 21-14, 21-15 to set up a second-round meeting with World No. 27 Niclas Nohr/Amalie Magelund of Denmark.
The World No. 25 Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See of Malaysia also advanced to the next round by overcoming Oliver Leydon-Davis/Anona Pak of New Zealand 21-15, 21-15 in the first round.
Hoo/Cheah will take on World No. 3 Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s mixed doubles World No. 8 Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying suffered an early exit at the HYLO Open. They were leading 15-11, 18-15 in the first set before losing the game to Denmark’s World No. 43 Mikkel Mikkelsen/Rikke Soby 20-22.
Chan/Goh managed to force a decider when they took the second game 21-15. In the deciding game, the Malaysian pair committed a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes after 14-14, allowing Mikkelsen/Soby to score four consecutive points to lead at 18-14 before losing the third set to the Danish pair 16-21.
After dropping the first game 17-21, the World No. 34 men’s singles player Daren Liew of Malaysia couldn’t force a rubber game when leading 20-19 in the second game against World No. 14 Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong. Lee showed remarkable resilience to score three consecutive points to win the second game 22-20.
Lee will take on Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the next round.
