Vantaa: Indonesia’s World No. 4 mixed doubles pair, Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti completed the Group C tie between Indonesia and Denmark at the 2021 Sudirman Cup with a victory on Wednesday.
Jordan/Oktavianti outlasted Denmark’s scratch pair, Mathias Thyrri/Amalie Magelund 21-8, 21-17 to seal Indonesia’s triumph against Denmark with an overall score of 3-2.
Before Jordan/Oktavianti, Indonesia already won two points contributed by Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in men’s doubles, and Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu in women’s doubles.
The two points for Denmark were won by Mia Blichfeldt in women’s singles and Anders Antonsen in men’s singles.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia who failed to contribute points in the men’s singles issued an apology to Indonesian fans after the match.
“Sorry I was not able to contribute points for the Indonesian team,” Ginting said after the match against Anders Antonsen as reported by PBSI.
Even though the World No. 5 Ginting held a 4-0 career meeting record against World No. 3, Anders Antonsen prior to the Sudirman Cup match, Ginting admitted Antonsen was playing better on Wednesday.
“I must admit he played better from start to finish, as he rarely made any mistakes,” said Ginting.
Meanwhile, when Jordan/Oktavianti took the court in the deciding mixed doubles match, Jordan immediately started attacks by unleashing his powerful smashes and quickly opened up the gap at 11-5 in the first game.
Jordan/Oktavianti were much more confident and kept pressuring their Danish opponents to make mistakes to win the first game 21-8.
The Danish pair tried to do better in the second game as they were once leading at 5-3. However, Jordan/Oktavianti were playing calmly to close the second game with a 21-17 victory.
Indonesia’s opponent in the quarter-final will be determined by a drawing scheduled to take place on Friday morning upon the completion of all group stage competitions.
