Kento Momota, Goh Liu Ying, Lee Zii Jia, Loh Kean Yew, and Other Shuttlers Shine at Opening Ceremony of Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo: The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games finally got underway on Friday after being postponed for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening ceremony featured a spectacular fireworks show, fantastic Japanese traditional choreography alongside the playing of video game soundtracks included music from Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Sonic the Hedgehog during athletes’ parade in a near-empty stadium. The atmosphere was something truly unique in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Malaysia was the 176th team to appear in the parade of athletes at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, and World No. 8 men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia together with World No. 7 mixed doubles player Goh Liu Ying were the flagbearers for their country.

In addition to Lee and Goh, badminton players below were also proud to be selected as flagbearers for their respective countries:

The biggest easter egg revealed in the opening ceremony was when the World No. 1 men’s singles player, Kento Momota of Japan carried the Olympic flag and marched into the stadium. It was a surprise to badminton fans, but a well-deserved one.
