Kyiv: Spanish badminton star, Carolina Marin just one match away from winning an unprecedented 5th consecutive European Championships title in Kyiv. The top-seeded women’s singles player beat No. 5 seed Neslihan Yigit of Turkey 21-18, 21-9 in the semi-final on Saturday.
Marin will face No. 7 seed Line Christophersen of Denmark who defeated No. 4 seed Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-13, 7-21, 21-10 in another semi-final.
“I am pretty happy to reach one more final in the Europeans, I’ll enjoy it tomorrow and I’ll do my best,” said Marin.
“Of course, I want to win the fifth title. But the most important thing is to keep improving my game as a player,” added Marin.
The only player who had won 5 European Championships titles was Peter Gade, he won five titles in the span of seven European Championships.
In men’s singles, No. 1 seed Viktor Axelsen eased into the final by beating unseeded Kalle Koljonen of Findland 21-14, 21-14. He will play compatriot No. 2 seed Anders Antonsen in the final.
Meanwhile, Antonsen managed to exact revenge on teammate Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus for his loss in the semi-final of Toyota Thailand Open in January 2021, by outlasting Vittinghus 21-14, 21-17.
In men’s doubles, No. 5 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany pulled off a huge upset to beat No. 1 seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark 23-21, 21-17. The German pair is set to take on No. 3 seeds and the 2014 European Championships winners, Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov of Russia in the final.
