Gniezno: The World No. 136 men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia came out on top against compatriot World No. 160 Leong Jun Hao in the 2021 Polish Open semi-finals on Saturday.

In his first match against Daniel Nikolov of Bulgaria on Saturday, Ng had to dig deep to rally past Nikolov 23-25, 21-13, 21-8 in 61 minutes.

Leong, however, was able to outlast World No. 66 Luís Enrique Penalver of Spain 21-16, 21-12 in the quarter-finals.

Ng, who defeated Leong in last year’s Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships men’s singles final and the President Cup, lived up to the billing with a 21-12, 21-12 triumph over the former Asian Junior champion. The 20-year-old Ng will take on the 2015 European Games men’s singles champion, Pablo Abian of Spain the final.

In men’s doubles, Chang Yee Jun/Chia Weijie of Malaysia also cruised into the final. They will meet Milosz Bochat/Adam Cwalina of Poland next.

Meanwhile, Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Choong Hon Jian/Toh Ee Wei needed only 23 minutes to beat local shuttler Milosz Bochat/Wiktoria Adamek 21-12, 21-6 to enter the final. They will play Nicolas A. Mueller/Ronja Stern of Switzerland for the Polish Open title.

Eoon Qi Xuan who was the sole Malaysian representative left in the women’s singles quarter-finals fought hard against No. 2 seed Kristin Kuuba of Estonia, but couldn’t pull off a surprise to go down 21-18, 19-21, 17-21.
