Basel: Malaysia’s World No. 30 women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan, made a remarkable run at the 2021 Swiss Open to eventually emerged as the women’s doubles champions on Sunday.
The young Malaysian pair has time and again shown their knack for eking out wins even when things were not going their way. And that’s what Tan/Muralitharan did in the final by defeating World No. 14 and European champions Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva 21-19, 21-12 in 43 minutes to win their first BWF World Tour Super 300 title.
“We were playing with no pressure today, that’s why we could give everything we have,” said Muralitharan after the match.
“We prepared well for the match. We communicated a lot during the match, which gave me a lot of confidence,” said Tan.
“We’ll be staying in Switzerland for another week, before competing at the All England. We really looking forward to playing at the All England,” added Muralitharan.
In mixed doubles, No. 6 seeds Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue of France was trailing by 4-11 in the second set against Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje of Denmark, but they somehow managed to tie the score at 16-16 to eventually win the final with 21-19, 21-19.
“We played really bad in the second set, but we believed in ourselves that we could come back, and we are really proud that we could achieve that,” said Delrue.
