Basel: Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying stayed on course for winning the Swiss Open title after sweeping aside Ronan Labar/Anne Tran of France 21-12, 21-16 to reach the Swiss Open quarter-finals on Thursday. The top-seeded pair from Malaysia will meet unseeded Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje of Denmark next.
Two other Malaysian independent mixed doubles pairs, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also advanced to the final eight. The No. 4 seeds Goh/Lai will play No. 6 seeds Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue of France while No. 5 seeds Tan/Lai will face unseeded Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Ashwini Ponnappa of India on Friday.
In women’s singles, World No. 3 Carolina Marin who came into the tournament aiming at the title, needed only 31 minutes to beat Julie Dawall Jakobsen of Denmark 21-11, 21-10. She will battle Zhang Beiwen of the USA in the quarter-finals.
Women’s singles World No. 7 PV Sindhu of India also eased to a victory on Thursday over Iris Wang of the USA. Sindhu will play Busanan Ongbamrungphan for a spot in the semi-finals.
In women’s doubles, Malaysia’s World No. 10 Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean wobbled at times in the face of some fierce resistance before winning 21-18, 21-17 against Linda Efler/Isabel Herttrich in 50 minutes. They will play Rachel Honderich/Kristen Tsai of Canada while another Malaysian women’s pair Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan will take on Amalie Magelund/Freja Ravn of Denmark on Friday.
