Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and Lee Zii Jia Win Swiss Open First-Round Matches

Basel: The Malaysian team got through the Swiss Open on Wednesday with varying degrees of success.

World No. 11 men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong outpaced their World No. 58 opponents, Daniel Lundgaard/Mathias Thyrri of Denmark 21-17, 21-11 in 33 minutes to meet Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany next.

Another Malaysian men’s pair, World No. 9 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik also made the second round by defeating Oliver Leydon-Davis/Abhinav Manota of New Zealand 21-13, 21-15. They will take on Jeppe Bay/Lasse Molhede of Denmark in the second round.

The World No. 13 Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi however were made to work hard before coming back from dropping the first set to beat Phillip Chew/Ryan Chew of USA 21-23, 21-12, 21-12. Ong/Teo will take on Denmark pair, Joel Eipe/Rasmus Kjer in the next round.

Although Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin put up a great fight, but they couldn’t advance after being knocked out by World No. 15 Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark 22-20, 13-21, 13-21.

In men’s singles, the No. 2 seed Lee Zii Jia overpowered unseeded Sergey Sirant of Russia 21-12, 21-14 to enter the second round. He’ll next play Victor Svendsen of Denmark.

Meanwhile, both Malaysian independent men’s singles players, Daren Liew, Soong Joo Ven, failed to win their first-round matches respectively. Liew surrendered to No. 6 seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 12-21, 16-21 while Soong went down to No. 7 seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia 15-21, 10-21.

The women’s singles competition saw World No. 32 Sonnia Cheah from Malaysia fought hard but fell short against World No. 25 Yvonne Li of Germany, losing 21-15, 13-21, 16-21 in a 56 minutes battle.

Two Malaysian women’s doubles pairs have earned their first-round wins on Wednesday. The No. 2 seeds Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean will play Linda Efler/Isabel Herttrich of Germany while Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan will face Anastasiia Akchurina/Olga Morozova of Russia in the last 16.
