Bangkok: Spain’s World No. 6 Carolina Marin is once again to take on World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the final of 2020 BWF World Tour Finals after they have met in both YONEX Thailand Open and Toyota Thailand Open finals in the last two weeks.
Marin defeated Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 21-13, 21-13 while Tai outlasted 18-year-old South Korean An Se-young 21-18, 21-12 in the semi-finals of BWF World Tour Finals on Saturday.
An who reached her third consecutive semi-finals in three weeks was disappointed with her performance in the semi-final.
“I think my body was tired, my speed was slow and I committed a lot of mistakes. I also couldn’t match Tai Tzu-Ying’s tempo,” said An.
Marin who will be gunning for a hat-trick of victories in Sunday’s finals praised Chochuwong for her performance.
“Three consecutive tournaments in three weeks is really tough,” said Marin.
“But I am looking forward to the final and I am giving my best,” added Marin.
In women’s doubles, Malaysia’s Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean lost at the hands of Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan of Korea 14-21, 15-21.
“We didn’t play well, we make a lot of mistakes. They are stronger and always put pressure on us. We are not very good at defending,” said Chow.
“They were able to respond to our attacks very quickly, so it’s difficult to put pressure on them. We have to start from the defensive and then launch a counterattack. It takes a lot of patience,” continued Chow.
Meanwhile, Lee Meng Yean said they’ve learned a lot from the three tournaments.
“The Korean pair was very fast. In these three weeks, we’ve learned a lot. The shuttlecocks were slow and we needed to learn to adapt to the court condition and also the speed of shuttlecocks as well as strengthening our mental and fitness,” said Lee.
Following the footsteps of Chow/Lee, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai also lost to South Korean pair of Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yujung 19-21, 8-21 in 39 minutes.
Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand are looking for their third mixed doubles straight-title in three weeks when they meet Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yujung on Sunday.
