Bangkok: World No. 9 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and World No. 14 Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong will meet for the second time in slightly more than a week on Friday in a Toyota Thailand Open quarter-final after they played each other in the first round of YONEX Thailand Open last Tuesday.
Chia/Soh lost to Goh/Tan 7-21, 19-21 in the first round of the YONEX Thai Open.
“We are now only focusing on our own performance. Winning or losing would be the second thing. Of course, we want to do our best to produce positive results,” said Chia.
Chia/Soh were made to work in the second round before securing a place in the quarter-finals with a victory over Indonesian pair, Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin 21-12, 6-21, 21-16.
“The victory in the first set helped a lot in terms of maintaining our confidence even though we lost in the second set. We attacked a lot in the third set,” added Chia.
For Goh/Tan, after emerging runners-up in the YONEX Thailand Open last Sunday, they looked sharp by beating Supak Jomkoh/Kittinupong Kedren from Thailand 21-15, 16-21, 21-15 on Thursday.
Another Malaysia men’s pair, World No. 15 Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi fought back from dropping the first set to see off Mathias Christiansen/Niclas Nohr of Denmark 8-21, 21-7, 21-17 and will play World No. 10 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty of India in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, World No. 7 mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying also entered the quarter-finals after beating Indonesian pair, Adnan Maulana/Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso 21-18, 21-15.
They will face Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Ashwini Ponnappa for a place in the semi-finals.
Another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See also made the final 8, after defeating French pair, Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue 21-14, 21-16, and will meet sixth seed from Indonesia, Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.
In women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo/Yap Cheng Wen bounced back from the first set defeat to cruise into the quarterfinals with a victory over French pair Emilie Lefel/Anne Tran 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 and will meet third seed from South Korea, Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan next.
