London: India’s reigning women’s singles World Champion PV Sindhu who shocked fans around the world when she tweeted the “I Retire” message on Nov 2, clarified that her intention was to encourage people to stay positive during the coronavirus crisis.
Speaking to IANS, Sindhu said: “Well, to be honest, the whole line read as I retire from the negativity, uncertainty caused by Covid-19. It was completely focused on bringing everyone’s attention to what we are dealing with currently and how we can try our best to move forward.”
“All the negativity, the influx of information and news had me troubled which is why I wanted to share my thoughts with everyone. The open letter for me was a way to articulate my concerns and fears,” explained Sindhu.
Sindhu was training at home throughout the Covid-19 lockdown, then for a bit at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, and is currently training in England in collaboration with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), focusing on her nutrition and recovery.
“GSSI and I have been working together for the past four years and this is a long process. We have been working on many aspects such as nutrition and recovery and this has been helping me immensely,” added Sindhu.
She is now getting ready for the upcoming two Asia Super 1000 events and the BWF World Tour Finals that will be held in Bangkok in January 2021. Of course, her other major goal would be to do well at the Olympics next year in Tokyo.
