Kuala Lumpur: Lee Chong Wei has sent badminton fans into a frenzy by revealing on Friday that he and Lin Dan might return to the badminton court to possibly play against each other for an exhibition match in the near future.
Lee said in a Facebook live interview that he hoped both of them could play an exhibition match after Lin’s retirement.
“Often time, when I get a chance to chat with Lin Dan, we did talk about our future, how we could use our influence to help promote the sport of badminton,” said Lee.
“However, Lin Dan’s current focus is to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. It’s really up to Lin Dan to decide what he wanted to do after the Olympic qualifying period has ended,” added Lee.
“We should wait until he is officially retired from the sport. After that, he and I would discuss how we could work together to promote the sport. After all, we are both sponsored by the same sponsor.”
When Lee was asked about Lin’s chances of making the Tokyo Olympic, he said it’s going to be a little bit harder for Lin because according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), every country only allowed to send a maximum of two players in the men’s singles event, provided both the players are in the world’s top 16 in the BWF Olympic Qualification rankings list.
“Right now, Shi Yuqi and Chen Long are in the top two Olympic qualifying spots for the China team, while Lin Dan is currently ranked third on the list.”
“Regardless, I think Lin Dan is still trying his best to make himself eligible to compete in Tokyo.”
As badminton fans, we wish one of the fiercest rivalries in badminton history could be reignited again.
