Bangkok: The World No. 5 women’s singles player Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand has received a scholarship from Bangkok Thonburi University, allowing her to continue her study for a doctoral degree specializing in Public Administration.
Although the 2013 world champion has been very actively pursuing her professional badminton career, she announced on her Instagram that she had just completed the study for her Master’s degree.
Intanon got her Political Science bachelor’s degree from the same university in 2018.
Intanon’s parents migrated to Bangkok from the country’s poor northeast region, and they worked at a candy factory in Bangkok. As a young six-year-old girl, she would often play around the factory. Her parents were always worried that she could suffer burns amidst huge pots of boiling water. Therefore, the owner of the candy factory had allowed her to play at the badminton courts inside the factory, which eventually unlocking her talent in the sport of badminton.
She became the youngest world junior champion at 14 and also the youngest ever world champion at 18.
Despite growing up poor, Intanon was taught to respect people, be polite, and work hard.
