Odense: Malaysia’s World No. 6 mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying powered past World No. 33 Kohei Gondo/Ayane Kurihara 21-17, 21-14 in 37 minutes to enter the Denmark Open second round on Wednesday.
After being eliminated early in both the Korea and China Open few weeks ago, Chan/Goh looked poised in their Denmark Open first round match. They will be meeting India’s Pranaav Jerry Chopra/N Sikki Reddy next.
In the men’s singles competition, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia was not able to exact revenge for his loss to Chen Long at China Open last month. Lee put up a spirited fight before losing 18-21, 21-15, 16-21 in 72 minutes.
Indonesia’s men’s doubles No. 2 seeds Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan produced some impressive badminton to beat Malaysia’s Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong 21-16, 21-14 in the first round. Ahsan/Setiawan will take on another Malaysian pair, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik on Thursday.
Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik came out on top in the first round after overcoming compatriots Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi 21-16, 24-22.
The Denmark Open is a BWF Super 750-level tournaments and is offering total prize money of US$775,000.
