Taipei: Top seeds Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia were forced to dig deep before booking their places in the mixed doubles second round at the Chinese Taipei Open in Taiwan on Tuesday.
The World No. 5 pair beat their opponents, World No. 36 Wang Chi-Lin/Cheng Chi Ya of Taiwan 17-21, 21-11, 21-11 in the first round. The Malaysian pair will be playing against Do Tuan Duc/Pham Nhu Thao of Vietnam next after the Vietnamese pair overcame local shuttlers Yang Ming-Tse/Wu Ti Jung 21-19, 21-10.
“We haven’t found our rhythm on day one of the tournament. Fortunately, we were able to recover quick enough to win the second and third set,” said Goh.
Together in the second round was Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See as they saw off Lu Ching Yao/Lee Chia Hsin of Taiwan 21-13, 21-10. Next up, Hoo/Cheah will meet Indonesia’s No. 3 seeds, Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.
However, another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie/Peck Yen Wei suffered an early exit as they fell to Adnan Maulana/Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso of Indonesia 19-21, 17-21.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei had advanced to the main draw after defeating two Taiwanese shuttlers, Chen Chi Ting and Lin Chun-Yi respectively in the qualification rounds. Cheam will take on Indonesian players Ihsan Maulana Mustofa in the first round on Wednesday.
