Calgary: The 17-year-old rising Korean star, An Se-Young impressed her fans again at the Markin MacPhail Centre on Sunday as she produced a dominant performance in the Canada Open final against Wang Zhiyi of China.
After winning the New Zealand Open by shocking 2012 Olympic Champion Li Xuerui of China in the women’s singles on May 5th, An showed she’s on the right path to stardom when she jumped and ran around the court with ease before picking up her second title of the season by defeating Wang ZhiYi 21-15, 22-20 in 55 minutes.
An seemed to lost her focus momentarily when she was leading at 20-16 in the second set, allowing Wang to level the score at 20-20. Fortunately, she quickly found her rhythm to take the game and win the title.
Denmark’s No. 8 seeds men’s doubles pair Mathias Boe/Mads Conrad-Petersen celebrated their first international title as a pair with a straight-set win over Hiroki Okamura/Masayuki Onodera of Japan 21-12, 21-18 in just 39 minutes.
Meanwhile, the women’s doubles final saw No. 7 seeds Setyana Mapasa/Gronya Somerville of Australia were able to play the aggressive badminton by defeating No. 5 seeds Chang Ye Na/Kim Hye Rin of Korea 21-16, 21-14 to clinch their first title of the year.
In the men’s singles final, China’s unseeded Li Shifeng needed 76 minutes to close out a hard-fought 20-22, 21-14, 21-17 battle over No. 6 seed Parupalli Kashyap from India.
And for the final match of the day, Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun/Eom Hye Won claimed a tough challenge from Guo Xin Wa/Zhang Shu Xian of China, outlasting the Chinese pair 21-19, 21-19 in 43 minutes.
