China Masters: Iskandar Zulkarnain advances with hard-fought win

Lingshui: Malaysia’s independent player Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin gave a brilliant performance and had cruised into the China Masters semi-finals on Friday.

Despite losing the first set, the World No. 125th player needed only 45 minutes to beat Taiwan’s Yang Chih Chieh 13-21, 21-9, 21-12 in the China Masters last eight in Lingshui, China.

Awaiting Iskandar in the semi-final will be Chinese player Liu Haichao who beat fellow countryman Gao Zhengze 21-13, 21-10.

In men’s doubles, former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) pair Chooi Kah Ming/Low Juan Shen went down to local players Di Zijian/Wang Chang 14-21, 21-16.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian and Korean combo of Tan Boon Heong and Kim Sa Rang fought hard, but could not overcome Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan, losing 17-21, 21-16, 16-21.
