Basel: The No. 7 seed and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan of China came back from 15-19 deficit to overcome unseeded Lee Dong Keun of Korea 21-19 in the first set of Swiss Open second round match on Thursday. He then dominated the second set to win 21-17.
Next up for Lin will be No. 4 seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia after Ginting defeated Daren Liew of Malaysia 21-13, 21-17.
Another Chinese player, the No. 2 seed Chen Long was stretched to the limit by his teammate Huang Yuxiang before overcoming the valiant Huang 21-15, 16-21, 21-11 to reach the quarter-finals. Chen will take on Subhankar Dey of India on Friday.
Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Shi Yuqi of China was made to work by unheralded Brazilian player Ygor Coelho before winning 16-21, 21-15, 21-11 in men’s singles second round action. Shi will meet Dutch player Mark Caljouw in the last eight.
In men’s doubles competition, Malaysia’s Mohamad Arif Ab Latif Arif/Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub Azriyn continued their revival in form at the Swiss Open by defeating Arun George/Sanyam Shukla of India 21-17, 21-13. Awaiting Arif/Azriyn in the quarter-finals are Kim Gi Jung/Lee Yong Dae of Korea.
Kim/Lee on the other hand, recorded an impressive win over Japanese pair Hiroki Okamura/Masayuki Onodera 21-8, 21-10 in the second round.
Last week’s All England women’s singles champion and No. 1 seed Chen Yufei shook off a tough challenge from Kristin Kuuba of Estonia, winning her second round match with 21-12, 20-22, 21-13.
Chen will face Riya Mookerjee of India in the final eight on Friday.
