Birmingham: After losing to Russia’s Evgenij Dremin/Evgenia Dimova 21-18, 17-21, 15-21 in the first round of German Open last Tuesday, both Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying are hoping for stronger performance at the All England that will kick off the first round on Wednesday.
The World No. 5 mixed doubles pair had enjoyed several successes since quitting the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) early this year. They have won the Thailand Masters, advanced to the semi-finals at both Malaysia and Indonesia Masters.
After the German Open setback, the 30-year-old Chan and 29-year-old Goh are looking to have a much better luck this time around at the All England.
“We played really bad last week at German Open, and I would like to deliver better performance in Birmingham,” said Chan.
“After a week of training in Germany, we will give our best at All England,” added Chan.
In addition, Chan was grateful that they will be accompanied by their coach, Chew Choon Eng during the All England.
“To have Choon Eng guide us from the sideline would really be a big help. After all, Liu Ying and I really need a coach’s during our international tournaments,” said Chan.
“Choon Eng’s presence is important because he can help us understand our mistakes and come up with plans on how to manage things better during a match.”
In 2017, Chan/Goh became the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to reach the All England final since 1955, but they felt short to China’s Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong, losing 21-18, 19-21, 16-21.
They will open against Takuro Hoki/Wakana Nagahara on Wednesday, and could face Tontowi Ahmad and his new mixed doubles partner Winny Oktavina Kandow in the second round.
