Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei insisted he wasn’t thinking about the opportunity of winning the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Instead, the three-time Olympic silver medalist chose to play down expectation by focusing on qualifying for the quadrennial sporting event.
“This time, qualifying for the Olympics is not an easy task for me. But I’m ready to compete and to qualify for the fifth time,” said Lee.
“All the players will definitely want to play at the Olympics as it only takes place once in four years,” added Lee.
Lee also acknowledged that he would have to compete with two other Malaysian players including Lee Zii Jia and Daren Liew for the Olympics.
“Zii Jia and Daren have not played in the Olympics, so it’s anybody’s game. I am not going to underestimate anybody.”
“I hope to stay in good shape and start preparing for the Olympics qualifying round.”
Lee is aiming to make his comeback in April at the Malaysia Open after a cancer battle, a month later than he originally hoped.
