Jakarta: Susi Susanti, Head of Development and High Performance for the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) continued to emphasize the importance of high quality training in an effort to improve players’ performance. She stressed that both training and competition could play a crucial role in shaping the career for a badminton player. Results achieved by the players were highly related to how they trained before leaving for tournament.

Susanti gave an example of World No. 1 men’s pair, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon who have been training incredibly hard.

“Kevin/Marcus train at a totally different level of intensity. Look at Marcus, he comes early and goes home late. What he feels he still need more training, he will keep adding more routines to his workout. For Kevin, he has the hunger for success. Look at them during the competition, they are always able to pull off the ultimate victory in a tight game, because they are used to facing this kind of pressure in training,” said Susanti.

“In terms of training quality, Fajar (Alfian)/Rian (Ardianto) are training at the similar intensity as Kevin/Marcus, and they are always able to cause a lot of problems for Kevin/Marcus during sparring sessions. But, Kevin/Marcus are showing a stronger hunger and drive for success,” added Susanti.

The World No. 1 men’s pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo has finished 2018 with 9 titles (8 titles for Super 500 and above tournaments and the Asian Games gold), while they also took home 7 Superseries titles in 2017.
