Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s men’s singles superstar Lee Chong Wei is expected to return to court for his official training at Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) within two weeks.
BAM’s Coaching Committee (C&T) chairman Ng Chin Chai also confirmed that. Ng told reporters that Lee met with BAM’s men’s singles coach – Hendrawan two days ago, and has expressed his desire to start training at BAM,” said Ng.
“However, for now Chong Wei still need some time to get things ready, perhaps we’ll see him within two weeks,” said added Ng at a sponsorship ceremony on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, BAM’s president Mohamad Norza Zakaria also revealed that he has been in touch with Lee in the past few days.
“Chong Wei said everything was in good shape and he is currently doing some exercising and training at home.”
“This is the latest development from Chong Wei. He will continue to follow the advice from his doctors. I am confident Chong Wei will be ready when Olympic qualification period kicks off on April 29, 2019,” said Zakaria.
Mohamad Norza Zakaria was also hoping there would be 2 or 3 representatives from Malaysia compete for each events in the Olympics.
“Now we have Chong Wei and Zii Jia competing for the men’s singles Olympic qualification, but I hope that there could be another men’s single player to challenge the Olympic qualification,” added Zakaria.
“I have discussed with Misbun about our players’ performance after Korea Masters, obviously there’s still some gap between Lee Zii Jia and Son Wan Ho. However, in my opinion Zii Jia is on the right track to the Olympics,” said Zakaria.
Despite having been diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer, Lee Chong Wei had lost none of his competitive spirit and is eyeing a record fifth Olympic appearance following his recovery from the illness.
