Almere: The World No. 62 Sourabh Verma of India who has been battling an ankle injury in the entire Dutch Open 2018 tournament, raised his game to close out a tough first set against Cheam June Wei of Malaysia 21-19 in the Dutch Open final.
The second game was predominantly one-sided and a predictable affair, as Verma quickly raced to a 13-5 lead against the Malaysian. Although Cheam attempted to close the gap by chasing until 12-15, but Verma staved off the stiff challenge from Cheam to win second game 21-13 and claim the Dutch Open.
In women’s singles, Denmark’s No. 1 seed Mia Blichfeldt dispatched China’s Qi Xuefei 21-16, 21-18 to claim the title in 47 minutes.
No. 1 seeds Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria clinched the women’s doubles title with a 21-17, 21-18 win over No. 3 seeds Selena Piek/Cheryl Seinen of Netherlands in 50 minutes.
Indonesia’s No. 2 seeds Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira/Ade Yusuf Santoso of Indonesia again, quieted the home crowd as they fought back from dropping the second set to overcome No. 5 seeds Jelle Maas/Robin Tabeling of Netherlands 21-19, 17-21, 21-11 for the men’s doubles title.
Meanwhile, England’s top seeds Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith successfully defended their Dutch Open title with a straight-set victory over French pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue 21-15 21-15 in 41 minutes.
