Changzhou: Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong turned on the style as they swept aside Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in straight sets 21-19, 22-20 at Xincheng Gymnasium, Changzhou Sports Olympic Centre in the first round of China Open on Wednesday.
Goh/Tan will meet Ricky Karandasuwardi/Angga Pratama of Indonesia on Thursday.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also advanced to the second round by overcoming Niclas Nohr/Sara Thygesen of Denmark 22-20, 21-18 in the opener. Tan/Lai will face a tougher test next where they will take on No. 4 seeds Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong in the second round.
Nevertheless, two other Malaysian mixed doubles pairs have crashed out of the tournament. Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and No. 7 seeds Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai were both defeated by their respective opponents in the first round.
Chan/Goh couldn’t exact the revenge for last week’s Japan Open semi-final loss to No. 1 seeds Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong, suffered a back-to-back defeat to the same pair with 18-21, 17-21 loss.
The No. 7 seeds Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai also stumbled at the first hurdle, losing to unseeded Ricky Karandasuwardi/Debby Susanto of Indonesia 15-21, 21-19, 16-21 in 54 minutes.
Malaysia didn’t send any men’s singles player to the BWF Super 1,000 World Tour tournament.
