Kuala Lumpur: While attending a check presentation ceremony conducted by AirAsia, it which the low-cost airline pledged RM1 million worth of flight sponsorship each year to Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the BAM president Mohamad Norza Zakaria has urged everyone to be more patient in regards to Lee Chong Wei’s health condition.
Zakaria said he contacted Lee, who is currently undergoing treatment for his respiratory illness in Taiwan.
“Chong Wei is still receiving treatment, we’ll need few more weeks before we could disclose the latest information about his condition,” said Zakaria.
The agreement between AirAsia and BAM would allow BAM players to fly for free when they participate in regional tournaments around ASEAN over the next three years.
Zakaria also told reporters due to Daren Liew’s bronze medal performance at the recently concluded World Championships, BAM is considering to list Daren Liew for the Asian Games that scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.
“It really depends on Daren’s injury, I will have a meeting with Ng Chin Chai (BAM’s secretary) and Misbun Sidek (BAM’s men’s singles coach) about this matter,” said Zakaria.
Despite suffering a right ankle injury, Liew showed great fighting spirits to see off Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in a 3-set thriller before losing to the eventual World Champion Kento Momota in the semi-finals.
