Basel: The experienced Danish World No. 2 men’s doubles pair Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen can now add Swiss Open title to their trophy cabinet.
The No. 1 seeds were great favorites coming into Sunday’s final, and they didn’t disappoint by winning their first title of the year when they beat Thai pair Tinn Isriyan and Kittisak Namdash 21-15, 21-11 in 36 minutes in Swiss Open final.
“We played a great match. This victory has boosted our self-confidence,” said Boe.
Although Isriyan and Namdash are the World No. 37, but they were able to cause a lot of troubles for Boe/Mogensen in the beginning of the first set. The Thai pair was able to narrow the deficit to 13-14 before Boe/Mogensen pulled away by reeling off 4 consecutive points and never looked back.
Isriyan/Namdash also got off to quick start in the second set by leading the Denmark pair 4-2. With a quite magnificent display, Boe/Mogensen then won five consecutive points and made Isriyan/Namdash bite the dust as they took the second set 21-11.
After Swiss Open, the next task for Boe/Mogensen will be the All England, which will be held in Birmingham of England from March 14 to March 18.
“As I said, it was good to earn some confidence prior to All England. We now have two weeks of training before we leave for the All England. Now we have proved to remain competitive, and we must continue training and stay active,” added Boe.
In women’s doubles final, unseeded Ayako Sakuramoto/Yukiko Takahata of Japan overcame a 16-18 deficit in the decider to bounce back and defeat No. 1 seeds Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria 19-21, 21-15, 21-18.
Meanwhile, Germany’s mixed doubles top seeds Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich survived a huge scare when they overcame a spirited effort from Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England to win 22-20, 21-19 in the final.
