Basel: World No. 2 men’s doubles pair Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark strolled into the Swiss Open final in an easy win over the Rio Olympic bronze medalists and the No. 3 seeds Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge of England 21-15, 21-14 in 44 minutes on Saturday.
The No. 1 seeds from Denmark were leading 14-7 before the English pair responded and narrowed the deficit to 13-14. Boe/Mogensen recomposed themselves and broke back to pull away with a 21-15 win in the first set.
After a tight beginning of the second set against Ellis/Langridge, with the score line reading 1-3, 4-3, 4-6, 7-7, Boe/Mogensen ran away with the match in the end as they notched up the semi-final victory by winning the second set 21-14.
The Danes are set to play Tinn Isriyanet/Kittisak Namdash of Thailand on Sunday.
Although Marcus Ellis lost in the men’s doubles, he and Lauren Smith were able to sail through the mixed doubles semi-final win over compatriots Ben Lane/Jessica Pugh 21-8, 21-4 to battle No. 1 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Herttrich of Germany in the final.
Meanwhile, Natsuki Nidaira of Japan barely broke a sweat in the women’s singles semi-final match after her teammates No. 2 seed Minatsu Mitani retired from the tournament. Nidaira will take on No. 1 seed Sayaka Takahashi for the women’s singles title.
Former World No. 2 men’s singles player Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark was finally forced to work hard for a win at the Swiss Open as he fought back to beat Lucas Corvee of France 21-14, 12-21, 21-18 in his semi-final on Saturday. Jorgensen took the first set and, although Corvee cruised through the second, the Dane made Corvee work hard again before booking his place in the final of the Swiss Open.
Jorgensen will meet No. 2 seed Sameer Verma of India in the final.
The 2018 Swiss Open, officially YONEX Swiss Open 2018, is the fifth tournament of the 2018 BWF World Tour and offers total prize money of USD $150,000.
