Gwangju City: Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair, Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean lifted their spirits at the Yeomju Gymnasium by extending their stay to the weekend.

The unseeded pair guaranteed their places in Saturday’s semifinals by defeating Chae Yoo Jung/Kim Hye Rin of Korea 21-17, 21-8 on Friday.

Chow/Lee will play another Korean pair Kim So Yeong/Kong Hee Yong next.

Former World No. 1 men’s pair Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong looked in control when they broke compatriots Choi Hyuk Gyun/Park Kyung Hoon in 21-13 the second set, having claimed the first 21-9. Lee/Yoo will battle teammates Jung Jae Wook/Kim Gi Jung on Saturday for a spot in the final.

In men’s singles, three Korean shuttlers managed to cruise into the semi-finals. The No. 11 seed Lee Dong Keun will play unseeded countryman Kim Min Ki who upset No. 1 seed Son Wan Ho in the third round, while No. 4 seed Jeon Hyeok Jin will clash with Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand.

Women’s No. 1 seed however, joined men’s singles No. 1 seed Son Wan Ho on the sidelines after she suffered a shock defeat, outlasted by unseeded Chinese player Wang Zhiyi 25-27, 21-7, 12-21.
