Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s former national player Vountus Indra Mawan Saniru has been named as Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) new men’s doubles assistant coach on Thursday.
This came just weeks after Jeremy Gan tendered his resignation on Sept 30.
The 28-year-old had partnered Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif to win the men’s doubles bronze medal at 2007 Asian Junior Championships and had helped the Malaysian mixed team to win the bronze medal at the 2015 Gwangju Universiade Games.
Earlier this year, he joined the Dutch club, Cuntapay Badminton Academy (CBA) as their junior head coach before returning to Malaysia two months ago.
“It all happened very fast,” Vountus said when contacted on Thursday.
“I returned to Malaysia after six months due to visa issues. I tried to resolve that problem but then I read about the vacancy at BAM, and realized Cheah Soon Kit’s plans were the same as mine, that’s why I applied for that job.”
“I am happy to be back.”
Vountus retired from the national team in 2012, started playing professionally before hanged up his racket two years later. He has a three month probation period before signing a two-year contract with BAM.
