Kuala Lumpur: After a tumultuous few months, Lee Chong Wei is determined to finish the season on a high by trying to qualify for the World Superseries Finals in Dubai.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Superseries finals in Dubai is an annual badminton tournament held at the end of the year where only the top eight players or pairs in the 12-leg Superseries rankings are eligible to participate.
The Malaysian who is currently ranked No. 6 in the Superseries ranking, has to do well in the last four Superseries tournaments of the year, including Denmark Open (Oct 17 to Oct 22), French Open (Oct 24 to Oct 29), China Open (Nov 14 to Nov 19), and Hong Kong Open (Nov 21 to Nov 26) in order to qualify for the year-ending tournament.
“I will be competing in the last four remaining Superseries tournaments. I look forward to one or two strong results to be able to make the cut for the Superseries Finals. However, it’s not going to be easy,” said Lee.
The World No. 7 told reporters that Denmark Open will be an extra special tournament as he will celebrate his 35th birthday on Oct 21.
“I will turn 35 during the Denmark Open. Time flies, this is my 18th year with BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia), I am still hungry for more titles and motivated to keep playing. I’m glad that I am still ranked in the top 10 of the world,” added Lee.
Lee also claimed he will be prepared but will also “enjoy himself” and not setting any targets for Denmark Open.
“I have evaluated and analyzed my performance after losing to Viktor Axelsen in the Japan Open final, I will be prepared this time.”
Lee could face Son Wan-Ho in the quarter-final while Chen Long in the semi-final of Denmark Open, while reigning world champion and home favorite Viktor Axelsen has been drawn in the lower half with Lin Dan and Kidambi Srikanth.
