Seoul: Malaysia’s sole remaining representative at the Korea Open, Chan Peng Soon/Cheah Yee See were denied a spot in the Korea Open final when they were outlasted by China’s Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping 15-21, 9-21 in the semi-finals on Saturday.
“We had a hard time focusing and made too many mistakes,” said Chan.
“Despite the defeat, the fact that we were able to reach the semi-finals of a Super Series tournament was really a strong boost of confidence for us, especially we are still a new pair,” added Chan.
“I believe we are getting better, and we will bounce back stronger,” said Chan who was paired with Cheah in May, and will fly to Tokyo to get ready for Japan Open next week.
In the women’s competition, it will be a rematch of the 2017 World Championships final 20 days ago, which Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara beat India’s P.V. Sindhu in an epic final that lasted 110 minutes.
The No. 8 seed Okuhara saw off teammate Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-18 in the Korea Open semi-finals on Saturday, while Sindhu was made to work hard by Chinese player He Bingjiao as she progressed to the final by battling past He 21-10, 17-21, 21-16 in 66 minutes.
