Kuala Lumpur: President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria made an announcement after chairing BAM Coaching and Training (C&T) Committee on Thursday that Malaysia’s badminton legend Misbun Sidek will return to BAM as the men’s singles head coach.

“Misbun is a well-respected coach. He knows what it takes to bring out the best in a player’s abilities, and has done that with Lee Chong Wei. Both Chong Wei and Misbun have agreed in principle about the appointment,” said Zakaria.

“I had a brief chat with Misbun before the C&T meeting, and he has agreed to join us as a head coach in men’s singles,” added Zakaria.

Misbun was Malaysia’s men’s singles head coach from 2002 before he left BAM in 2011 after BAM was not supportive of his proposals that could potentially boost and nurture more Malaysian badminton talents.

Zakaria also stressed that this BAM strategy performance proposed by Technical Director Morten Frost would build a strong badminton program that could help Malaysia win the 2018 Thomas Cup.

“This blueprint from Frost is to allow us to have balanced men’s singles and men’s doubles players to win the Thomas Cup. I believe Misbun and Soon Kit would be the great combination for the task,” said Zakaria.

Below is the latest BAM coaching structure under the 2017 to 2020 performance strategy:

Men’s singles head coach: Misbun Sidek
Men’s singles assistant coach: Hendrawan, Indra Widjaja and Sairul Amar Ayob
