Kuala Lumpur: After Malaysian badminton squad came up short of reaching Sudirman Cup semi-final, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have decided to make some adjustments to the team roster.
Women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei were the first to feel the impact of BAM’s changes when they were dropped from competing in this year’s World Championships in Glasgow.
Hoo/Woon were given three months to prove their worth especially during the upcoming 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
“We are going to evaluate their performance in June, July and August before we make any final decision about their partnership,” said BAM Technical Director Morten Frost Hansen.
Malaysia’s top men’s top men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong have reportedly pulled out of Indonesian Open following an injury suffered by Tan Wee Kiong during the Sudirman Cup.
Malaysia’s men’s doubles coach Jeremy Gan told reporter this would allow Tan to undergo rehabilitation and get some rest before leaving for the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland from Aug 21 to 27. Based on the original schedule, the pair was supposed to play at Indonesian Open and Australian Open before heading to Glasgow.
“Wee Kiong is having pain on his injured knee during the training and jumping smash. He is undergoing physiotherapy, and we’re hoping he could recover quick enough to start training for the World meet,” said Gan.
The pair who won the Rio Olympic silver medal, needs to work extra hard to reverse their form slump after crashing out of the quarterfinal stage in the All England, India Open and Singapore Open in 2017.
